FreeCell — How to play

FreeCell starts with all 52 cards face up in eight tableau columns. Use four free cells as one-card holding spaces while rearranging cards and building four foundations from Ace to King by suit.

Tableau cards descend in rank and alternate color: a black 7 can go on a red 8. You can move an exposed card, or shift a longer sequence through intermediate moves when enough free cells and empty columns are available.

Move Aces and other low cards to their matching foundations when safe. The goal is to transfer all cards to the foundations. Because every card is visible, plan how to release blocked cards before filling the free cells.

FreeCell — Rules

All cards begin face up. Build tableau columns downward by one rank while alternating red and black. Build each foundation upward in one suit from Ace through King.

Each of the four free cells holds one card. Empty tableau columns provide additional temporary space. The open cells and columns limit how large a sequence you can relocate through intermediate moves.

Move a card to a foundation when it is the next rank in that suit. The objective is to transfer all 52 cards to the four foundations.

FreeCell — Tips and strategy

Keep free cells open. Each occupied cell reduces your options, so do not park a card without a follow-up plan.

Scan all eight columns before moving. Since every card is visible, locate the blocked low card you need and plan the moves that will release it.

Use empty columns as flexible space for shifting sequences and exposing cards, rather than filling them without a clear purpose.

Before moving a low card to a foundation, check whether the tableau needs it to support an alternating-color build.
